Physical Therapy & Treatments for Sciatica

About sciatica
Sciatica is one of the most common conditions treated here at APM. It is defined as an injury to the sciatic nerve which starts in the gluteal region. This nerve is very long and very thick and is comprised of the 5 lumbar nerves from the lumbar spine forming a sciatic nerve on each side of body. The sciatic nerve will branch off and terminate into both feet. Injury to the Sciatic nerve itself is rare but irritation, pinching and inflammation of a nerve as it exits the spine can cause this common radiating pain. Prolonged nerve injury can cause muscle weakness, numbness and severe pain causing loss of function into lower extremities. About 40% of people experience Sciatica at some point.
